The winemakers of McLaren Vale are amongst the
most cohesive and friendly in Australia. Their attitude is extremely
jovial with great hospitality being extended to Australian and international
visitors. The areas winemakers have funded the McLaren
Vale and Fleurieu Visitors Centre which is located at the entrance
to McLaren Vale and offers visitors to the area advice and information
on all matters relating to the district.
<Click here to see location map.>
The following is a list of McLaren Vale producers. There are now over
sixty wineries in the region, many with cellar door facilities. Of course,
if you can't make it to McLaren Vale, many of their wines are available
to purchase online and can be shipped both within Australia and overseas.

Journeys End Vineyards
is a new vineyard venture in McLaren Vale and a new label for winemaker,
Ben Riggs. Riggs is one of Australia's great Shiraz wine makers
who has a particular passion for Shiraz from McLaren Vale.
Journeys End produces three types of Shiraz: the "Beginning",
the "Ascent" and the "Arrival." Each wine represents
part of a "great Shiraz Journey" culminating in
the Arrival Shiraz. "There are many clones of Shiraz"
says Riggs, "each having their own unique qualities, all
of which respond differently to specific terroirs. In order to maximise
flavour and complexity, I select several clones of Shiraz from McLaren
Vale and Fleurieu vineyards. These clones include SA1654, SA2626,
SA1127, SA712 and BVRC 30. The use of five or more clones adds depth
& complexity to the wines."
Ben Riggs in the blending room.
Unfortunately, not all of Journeys Ends wines are available as yet.
The 2002 Beginning Shiraz has just been released while the 2001
Ascent Shiraz is expected on shelves around October 2003.
The name "Journeys End" and its association with vineyards
has its inception in a little known poem by C.P. Cavafy, simply
titled "Ithaka." There are many similarities in the 'life'
of a vineyard. Each year is a new journey with new expectations
and hopes, new learning experiences and challenges. The journey
from vine to bottle is a long and often anxious one, the ending
of which marks the beginning of a new cycle, a new season. And just
as each bottle in itself marks the end of another year, each Journeys
End label also reflects a different aspect of that journey - from
the careful preparation of new cuttings to the relief felt in picking
the last bunch of the harvest and finally, the ecstatic escape to
Maslin Beach. See www.journeysendvineyards.com.au
